Sports Photography with Award-winning Sports Photographer Steve Apps

Step up your photography game with this three-part sports photography workshop  designed to blend essential skills with real-world experience. Through this event you can learn and practice the techniques needed to capture outstanding sports photos. On day one, award-winning sports photographer Steve Apps will explore the tips and tricks in shooting sporting events such as this softball game. Learn how to set your shutter speed to stop the action while also maintaining proper exposure. Steve will also cover the essentials when it comes to following plays, catching the perfect moment, and keeping strong compositions. The next day, we will take in a Madison Nites Mares softball game with exclusive media access to the field to practice your new skills. On top of special access, Sony will also be providing cameras and lenses to borrow during the game. On the following, Tuesday you can participate in a in person or virtual critiquing session.


Who Should Attend:
Photographers of all levels looking to break into sports photography or improve their action-shot skills and sports feature photos. All camera models are welcomed.


Part 1: Learn the Fundamentals

In this classroom-style session, Steve will cover the technical and creative aspects of sports photography, including:

  • Choosing the right gear for the field including how to dress and, carry equipment
  • Mastering settings for fast action
  • Anticipating key moments in the game and positioning for different situations
  • Composition tips to tell a dynamic sports story
  • Ethics, access, and working with teams
  • Developing a plan on how you want to cover an event

Part 2: On-Field Practice at the Madison Nite Mares Softball Game

Date/Time: Saturday June 28, 1:00-3:00pm

Warner Park, Madison, WI

Put your new skills to the test during a live shoot at the Madison Nite Mares softball game! You’ll get real-time coaching while photographing fast-paced, unpredictable game action—capturing the sweat, speed, and spirit of the game.
Sony will also have cameras and lenses for you to borrow during the game!

What to Bring:
Your camera, favorite lenses, extra batteries/memory cards, and a passion for freezing epic moments in time.


Part 3: In person or online critiquing session on July 1st from 6:00-7:00
Choose your favorite photos or ones you want help in diagnosing what went wrong, and we’ll review them either online or in person on July1. You will receive instructions on how to submit your photos during the class.

Your Instructor

Steve Apps is an award-winning sports and documentary freelance photojournalist based in Madison, Wisconsin.

In the thirty-five plus years in newspapers, his positions include chief photographer/staff photographer at the Wisconsin State Journal; The Post Crescent, Appleton, WI; Sarasota Herald Tribune; and Wausau Daily Herald.

His photo coverage of the Green Bay Packers has been recognized five times by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Minimum Registration

Camera Company classes need a minimum number of students to register before we can hold the class. If the minimum registration has not occurred within two days before the class date it will be cancelled. All students who enrolled in the class will be notified by email and will be offered to transfer their registration to another class offering or issued a full refund.
